Why Improv Is Scarier Than Death

When I took a speech class in college, I learned a new word that I loved to say: extemporaneous.

I loved to say it, and what it meant scared me to death.

To be extemporaneous means to ad lib - to speak (and presumably, to speak intelligently) without a chance to prepare, at the drop of a hat. Another Merriam-Webster definition says "happening suddenly and often unexpectedly and usually without clearly known causes or…

The power of Improv

Last night I had the great pleasure of witnessing Leif Hansen and two of his Improv friends in action at our Puget Sound Coaches Association meeting. In a word WOW. I know profound huh? And truly that is the word that I woke up with the morning after witnessing something so extraordinary with Leif and his troupe and how they engaged and audience through Improv.

In just about 75 minutes time Leif and his troupe had assisted in tearing down… Continue

Leif.........thanks so much for hosting such an awesome event experience Thursday. The Playformation section of the 2 hours was great fun and really brought the group together as one. I truly felt it was one of the best, if not the best, Biznik events I have participated in. I hope to say connected to you and continue to gain from your knowledge. It was great fun, and I strongly encourage other Biznik members to check it out. Well done

The mark of a true professional is to be open-minded to constructive criticism. You've shown that you listen and process feedback to improve your performance. That's one of the most difficult things to do in business. I respect and admire you for that!

  • Ruth Hartmann

Having attended four of Leif's events, I can say without a shadow of doubt, that Playformation is one of the quickest, easiest and most fun ways to discover and get to know yourself -- your strengths, fears, doubts, hopes, dreams and possibilities -- and to create a new normal.

In early January I read an article by Kate Phillips, that proposed the idea that in order to grow your business you first have grow yourself. "Growing myself" is exactly what I have walked away with after each event, and I am confident that my business will also grow as a result. If you are ready go beyond your own status quo, go to a Playformation session!

I lead networking meetings with businesswomen -- Power Chicks, we're called -- and since attending your WOW event, these event have been even more effective.

Known for being high-energy, they're even better now thanks to your tips on engaging people.. Example: At the last meeting, we tossed a ball around the room; whoever caught it shared one word that described previous networking experience. The result was lots of sharing, loads of laughter and a great "warm-up" to deeper, more authentic connections.

    Feedback was so positive. Thanks!

Leif has a way of helping you expand your comfort zone, and it's so safe and fun, you don't even realize it's happening. That's a true gift! Plus, the info you take away will support your business in a myriad of ways. I was at his November WOW! event, and I am coming back for the full-meal-deal on January 23.

Leif Hansen is the most pleasant surprise I've experienced in a long time. I attended one of his WOW workshops, how to put more wow into presentations and it was so much more than what the workshop details promised. Leif is very Present, Caring, Knowledgeable, entertaining, and loving. He's not afraid to stretch into whatever is needed to serve his clients. I have a new mentor! Thanks Leif for being REAL.

Leif and George Huang hosted an AMAZING event in October. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was so happy to participate in creative activities, get some useful information, and made connections. They offered more than sit/listen and got us out of our boxes! Thank you.

Leif knows how to trigger the creative spirit and whimsical soul of an audience, collectively and individually. He is a master at infusing fun into "games" that inspire and teach. "Playformation" is a must-attend event whenever it is offered. For that matter, any of his events are a treasure in which to participate. Thanks, Leif, for demonstrating how true passion can spark business success.

Leif is a master facilitator, and probably the most "playful" person I know! He's smart and fun and has a real talent for getting others to "play" their way through problems, arriving sometimes at surprising solutions that could not have otherwise been discovered. I have known Leif for years and I recommend him and his work highly!

How great it was to get new ideas and vision for business concerns and issues and to move through them with simple, fun, interactive exercises that left me knowing people in my community better....and wanting to do more of this kind of 'Plurk' (play/work). Leif was a great facilitator. Many thanks!

I would like to compliment Leif on the fabulous workshop today for our group Engage!

Leif is an innovative leader who focuses on helping others achieve greatness! His creative nature really shines in the thoughtful exercises he has developed in order to allow the group to feel comfortable in no time. It really works!

Although we only had an hour and a half to get to know the group and experience something meaningful together it seemed like that after a few minutes I felt like I knew the group on a personal level.

Leif is a gifted facilitator and I feel honored to get the opportunity to work with him!

Leif Hansen and his Improv Troupe were a fantastic add to our Puget Sound Coaches Association meeting. He brought forth the inner value of playfulness and exploration with others to the membership. People were able to stretch their comfort zones and get out of their 'normal' way of showing up to just play and laugh and engage the creative side of their whole self. Thanks you Leif for your ability to create a spark in others as they explore the lighter side of their life.

Loving what you are doing as the social catalyst for biznik. I was already impressed with your ultra-authentic ability to connect and talk with anyone and now I am seeing how you are able to take those rare skills and impact a community and add layers of relevance and interest to a business like biznik. Thanks for your huge contribution and commitment to this community, Leif. It's always fun and surprising to see what you come up with!

  • Genevieve Vayda

Leif's friendly intelligence augments his helpful insight as to how to get a group of strangers, and the 'stranger's' psyche, into new, useful, and sometimes wonderful spaces. I could beat my head against a wall for a year, or 'play' through ONE of these exercises - you can guess which is more fun and productive! Bust your Blocks with Leif sometime soon!

  • Richard Baum

Playformation was such an incredible value. Proof positive that these Biznik events should have fees. It is so important to have creative, collaborative safe settings to explore ideas and receive feedback from others. Even one of the ideas I came away with will have huge impact on my business. Leif is one Biznik everyone should know. I’ve attended two of Leif’s workshops, one at BizJam and one he hosted on his own. Both workshops were a lot of fun and were very helpful. Leif is the consummate professional, he’s someone who strives to help his fellow indies succeed, he’s highly creative and is a very kind-hearted guy, too! I'm not going to pretend to be enlightened...I'm still not exactly sure what the outcome of "Something Completely Different" was supposed to be. What I do know is that Leif's group facilitation style and his energy are unlike any other. I would highly recommend checking out one of his workshops, especially if you want help smiling, laughing and thinking outside of yourself. I'm sure I'll do another one in the future, since I DO want to figure out the secret of it all. :)
